The Future of the new Media Landscapes
Social media formats have already overtaken television as means of media consumption and opened up new audiences; job profiles such as “Social-Media-Manager” or “influencer” attest that the transformation is not only found in everyday life but can also be found in the working world. The newfound internal competition and power dynamics that have emerged within the media sector are supposed to be resolved in 2020 through the signing of a new state media treaty.
However, how can opinion formation be safeguarded given the prevalence of individualized streaming and the use of social-bots? What functions can public offerings provide within the new media landscape? Who sets the rules for social media platforms, search machines, and streaming services, and is a communications and content platform necessary on the European level? The fourth Night Shift addresses the topic of the Media and its effects on the future democratic foundations of society at centre stage.

»Start-ups with AI-based language tools have shown that overcoming language barriers can bring people in Europe together in new ways. A public-service platform for Europe would moreover make it possible to supply Europe’s people with news from a European perspective. This would be one way to pierce Europe’s national media bubbles.«

»Public-service broadcasting is hugely beneficial for society. We must continue to serve conventional media and at the same time strengthen our online presence. Online communication is becoming more and more important. This is especially the case where those under 40 are concerned. We have to ask ourselves how we reach those who now only access social media. This is who we developed the “funk” formats for.«

»Being able to use media competently is decisive in the age of digitalisation. Young people who primarily inform themselves via social media need to know how to identify fake news. On the one hand, that requires quality media; on the other hand, however, it means the competent use of media needs to be taught early on.«
